Grand Canyon West: take the tour or drive yourself from Las Vegas?
Updated October 12, 2026 · 6 min read
For most people, take the tour: the ten-hour Grand Canyon West and Hoover Dam day at €85.26 is hard to beat for one or two people: transport and two meals are in the price, and nobody has to drive. Drive yourself only if you are three or more, already have a car, or want to arrive after 3 pm for the late light — in that case buy the €57.11 afternoon admission with Skywalk and compare cars.
| Way to go | From | Rating | What you handle yourself |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ten-hour bus day with Hoover Dam and two meals | €85.26 | 4.8 (3,827) | nothing: transport, breakfast, barbecue lunch |
| Twelve-hour small-group tour with Skywalk | €176.55 | 4.8 (503) | nothing: picnic lunch, Guano and Eagle Points |
| Afternoon admission with Skywalk | €57.11 | 4.5 (49) | the car, the drive, the food, the return |
What the tour actually takes off your hands
Grand Canyon West is about a two-hour drive from Las Vegas, according to the operator’s visitor page, and it sits on Hualapai land with no postal address. Its FAQ tells drivers to enter “Grand Canyon West” or “Grand Canyon West Airport” into the navigation, and says the primary roads are paved and suitable for passenger cars.
That part is easy. The part that surprises self-drivers comes after parking: “Transportation by private vehicle is not permitted at Grand Canyon West”. You leave the car in the designated lot and move between viewpoints on the free hop-on hop-off shuttle. A tour bus does exactly the same thing, so the tour saves you the drive, not the shuttle.
Food is the second difference. The operator states that bringing outside food and drink is not permitted, so a self-driver pays for meals on site. The ten-hour tour lists a restaurant breakfast and a scenic barbecue lunch in its description; the picnic lunch on the small-group day is listed too. Check what that means for your diet on the booking page.

Where driving yourself genuinely wins
Time. The operator’s doors open at 8 am and the last entry ticket is sold at 4:30 pm. A car lets you leave at six in the morning and be back for a dinner reservation; the bus day is ten hours door to door, with pickup and Hoover Dam in the schedule.
The afternoon ticket is the other case. It is valid for entry at 3:00 pm or later only and includes the Skywalk and the hop-on hop-off shuttle to three viewpoints. It is the cheapest way onto the glass bridge in our selection, but it is an entry ticket and nothing else: no transport, no meals, no guide. For the full pass comparison see which ticket includes the Skywalk.

The arithmetic for one, two and four
A rental car, fuel and parking are charged by day or by vehicle, not by passenger, which is why headcount decides this. We do not quote a rental price here because it changes by date and class; the point is the shape of the sum.
- One person: the bus at €85.26 is hard to beat once you add a rental car and the admission ticket. You also avoid four hours of driving.
- Two people: still favours the bus once you add admission and two meals on site, unless you were renting the car for other days anyway.
- Four people: the car’s cost is shared four ways, and the drive-yourself day starts to win, particularly with children who need their own pace. Our hire-car guide says when a rental is worth it at all, and the excursions without a car covers the other direction.
Who should not drive
If anyone in the party would drive tired after a long day, take the tour: the return drive comes at the end of a day of walking and a four-hour round trip on the road. If you want a drink with dinner afterwards, the same applies.
The small-group tour is the choice when you want the named viewpoints and a smaller vehicle, not when you want to save money. It costs about twice the bus and adds two hours.

Our recommendation
Book the ten-hour bus day unless you are at least three people with a car, in which case the afternoon admission and your own wheels give you the best day for the money.
